Welcome message from the Chairman of DFSC

The Yau Tsim Mong (YTM) District, spanning Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Mong Kok, is not only the geographical heart of Hong Kong but also the very soul of this city. It is a place where the world-renowned Victoria Harbour skyline meets traditional markets rich in local heritage; it serves as a major hub for international finance and retail while also being the home where over 300,000 residents have settled. This unique landscape of "vibrant commerce and residency" and the "blend of old and new" creates the district’s unparalleled vitality, yet it also presents significant challenges for fire safety.
Our district is extremely densely populated with a diverse range of buildings—from modern Grade-A office towers and mega-malls to numerous historical "Tong Laus" (tenement houses) and "Three-Nil" buildings. In the face of potential fire risks, "prevention is better than cure" is not just a slogan; it is the cornerstone of our work.
As the Chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Fire Safety Committee, I will lead the Committee in pursuing the following three objectives:
1. Deepening Community Outreach: We will organize fire drills and seminars deep within the community to ensure every resident—especially the elderly and our ethnic minority friends—masters fundamental fire prevention and evacuation knowledge.
2. Strengthening Inspection and Collaboration: We will maintain close ties with the Fire Services Department and relevant agencies to intensify hazard inspections in old buildings and hawker areas, aiming to upgrade the fire safety facilities of the buildings.
3. Building Neighborhood Networks: We will encourage active participation from Owners' Corporations and resident organizations to establish a community self-help fire safety network, thereby enhancing emergency response capabilities.
Fire safety is essential to the well-being of every household. I firmly believe that only through the tripartite collaboration of the Government, the Committee, and the general public can we safeguard the tranquility of this bustling district.
I look forward to working hand-in-hand to build a formidable "Great Wall" of fire safety. Together, we will make Yau Tsim Mong a safe and livable community where residents live in peace, businesses operate with confidence and tourists visit with joy.
